Mushroom Men: The Spore Wars

It’s high time to get acquainted with Mushroom Men: The Spore Wars. It’s an unusual action from the independent studio Red Fly Studios. The project was announced in early 2007, but we got it only in late 2008. The game shows us what this independent studio is able to create for gamers.
The game tells us about the fate of fungi. To be exact once a meteorite fell from the sky. But in spite of this only mushrooms survived but also many other plants too. Animal behavior wasn’t affected too. We’re playing for Pax. He’s the sole survivor of the destroyed settlement of his relatives. The game starts with our arrival in the village, where there is a small tutorial. In the end, Pax absorbs a relic of the village. I mean a fragment of the meteorite and of course we are going in search of another fragment to replace it. Of course, we travel through the vast, seemingly familiar, but unusual for people areas encountering many dangers and enemies, friends and colleagues.

Certainly I can’t ignore such an important issue as graphics. In general I can say that graphics looks pretty good. The character models are detailed at a high level, textures are mostly clear and precise. Of course it is impossible to forget about design. I only want to say words of appraisal in this case. This game is excellent and unique. I think you’ll like these deadly creatures. Design is made simply perfect. This world has been transformed by the spores of the meteorite and it looks unique and unrepeatable. Malicious moles, rabbits, opossums are made at a very high level. Populations of fungi are excellent. The entire city we built of improvised materials such as pencils, empty boxes, trash, and various details. In general, everything is done perfectly.

By the way all the sounds are nice and smooth. Don’t forget that this game was developed by independent developers. As follows from this there’s no need to look forward to such a music typical to Mario and Zelda. Music plays a background role here and soundtracks are hardly remembered. But as for me I’m not surprised because these soundtracks are what I’ve expected indeed. As for me I don’t think that background soundtracks can only be great symphonies created by prominent composers. On the contrary I’m sure that background soundtracks shouldn’t be “too awesome”. Otherwise they would distract you from the game play. As for me I can listen to a good music at any time I like. And I’ve got enough MP3s in my collection. But I play video games not to listen to great composers’ creation but to get pleasure from the virtual world first of all. Play Mushroom Men and don’t think about soundtracks.
